Policy

All of the research done within the Laboratory is geared towards policy issues, specifically:

Convention on Biological Diversity - signed at Rio and adopted in 1993

which highlighted the need for the conservation of biodiversity, sustainability of resources and the alleviation of poverty.

  • All of our research concerns the development of sustainable solutions to land management problems, based on sound ecological understanding.
  • Our international work is concerned with providing support and advice towards the alleviation of poverty and improving the conditions of people living in or near despoiled land.

  • As part of this interest we have developed a policy document for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity in University Biology Departments. This policy has been accepted by the School of Biological Sciences within the University of Liverpool.
CAP reform

which has brought about a shift in emphasis from land management which was production-oriented to one which is environmentally sustainable.
  • Management of bracken and other late-successional sites towards early successional ones helps meet Biodiversity Action Plan Targets
  • Land management solutions can be implemented as part of the national response strategies to CAP reform - Environmentally Sensitive Areas, Countryside Stewardship.
